On November 20, 1683 Talbot County authorized the establishment of a ferry service for "Horses and Men". The county paid Richard Royston 2,500 pounds of Tobacco per year to operate the ferry.
The Oxford-Bellevue Ferry is believed to be the oldest privately operated ferry service. The ferry has run continuously since 1836.
